(1) The thesis by research shall be written in the prescribed format and shall not exceed 100,000 words excluding the list of references, footnotes, endnotes, appendices, abstract, and extended summary, if applicable. Bye-laws may specify the minimum number of words. The work presented shall conform to the established scholarly standards of the appropriate discipline.

(2) For the Ph.D. Degree by Practice as Research, students shall be required to submit a presentation of practice supported by an analytical account of the process and a thesis. The thesis shall consist of between 30,000 to 50,000 words which shall normally constitute around 50% of the project. The submission as a whole shall demonstrate original and significant contribution to knowledge in the field, showing doctoral level ability of analysis and mastery of existing knowledge in a way that is accessible and auditable by knowledgeable peers.

(3) The presentation of formally examinable practice shall not normally be more than one calendar year in advance of the final written submission, as specified in the Faculty Bye-laws.
