Motors rated above 1 / BHP shall be of the 3 phase, 3 wire 2

type wherever in the opinion of the distribution system operator a 3

phase supply is readily available. Where a 3 phase supply is not so readily available, the distribution system operator shall decide whether to permit the use of a single-phase motor or to cause or require the extension of the 3 phase mains. Single-phase motors rated at 3 BHP or over will only be permitted in exceptional cases.
